Additional CT scanner installed at Scunthorpe hospital

Patients are benefiting from a new state-of-the-art CT scanning suite which is now up and running at Scunthorpe General Hospital.

The £1.9million investment, which was paid for from capital funding, has seen the installation of a second CT scanner on site with a dedicated waiting area, new reporting room and staff change area.

A CT – computerised tomography – scan uses x-rays and a computer to create detailed images of the inside of the body such as the internal organs, blood vessels and bones.

They can be used to:

  • Diagnose conditions including damage to bones, injuries to organs, problems with blood flow, strokes and cancer
  •  Guide further tests or treatment for example helping to determine the location, size and shape of a tumour before radiotherapy, or allowing a doctor to take a needle biopsy (where a small tissue sample is removed using a needle) or drain an abscess
  •  Monitor conditions such as checking the size of tumours during and after cancer treatment.

The new diagnostic kit will primarily be used for emergency patients, referred from A&E and the wards, while the existing scanner in the Blue Sky Imaging Suite will be used for people with an outpatient appointment. It should mean there’s less disruption for patients attending for a planned appointment and it should also help improve the flow of patients through A&E.

Ruth Kent, divisional head of clinical support services, said: “This is fantastic news for patients and staff. We’ve had a couple of really tough years with scanners breaking down and this gives us the resilience we need. If one scanner breaks down we have another scanner available and shouldn’t need to transfer patients to Grimsby.”

The Trust’s charity, The Health Tree Foundation, also funded another “sky inside” ceiling panel, in keeping with the Blue Sky Imaging Suite theme.

Last year a new replacement scanner was also installed at Grimsby’s Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital.
